Why do you need Google Analytics?

First things first, Google Analytics is a service that helps you identify what is driving traffic to your website and also better understand your customers. You have tools within the service that allow you to deepen your knowledge and evaluate the performance of your website , after which you will be able to provide better service to users.

Without a tool like Google Analytics, you would not know data such as the countries that generate the most traffic, the device used, the pages they visit, the time until they stay on your website, etc. Not being able to identify if your SEO results are paying off or not.

Let’s go back to focusing on manual actions and the risk of penalization towards which a site that violates Google’s rules may encounter: the theme is very delicate and we saw only a few days ago how much attention the American company dedicates to the fight against spam to clean up its search results pages and offer users positive experiences.

Google’s commitment against spam and manipulation

“Google is constantly working on improving Search,” says Waisberg at the start of the video, which is why changes to search engine algorithms are subject to a detailed qualitative assessment before the official release. The algorithms are excellent in identifying spam and, in most cases, intervene automatically to eliminate it from the results pages.

To further refine the quality of search results, Google scans specific sites that do not comply with the policies and guidelines (the quality standards for webmasters ): in these cases, a human being can analyze the site and possibly decree a manual action. When this occurs, a part of the whole site may lose positions in the rankings or even be excluded and not shown in Google search results.

The types of manual action

The list of possible problems that generate a manual action includes various prohibited or wrong interventions and techniques, such as:

1 User-generated spam.
2 The free host containing spam.
3 Structured data problem.
4 Unnatural links that link to the site.
5 Unnatural links from the site.
6 Skinny content with little or no added value.
7 Cloaking and / or redirect commands not allowed.
8 Pure spam.
9 Compromised images.
10 Hidden text and/or use of excess keywords.
11 Discrepancies in the contents of the AMP pages.
12 Redirect commands not allowed on a mobile device

Pure spam

It starts with pure spam, “what many webmasters call black hat SEO, ” which includes complex techniques such as the automatic generation of meaningless content, cloaking, scraping (illicit use of content from other sites), and other shady practices.

Skinny content – thin content

Google defines as “skinny” or “thin” (literally, thin ) the low-quality content that offer information with little or no added value for users. This becomes a problem when a site has a significant amount of low quality or superficial pages, which do not offer users substantially unique or useful content and constitute a policy violation.

Structured data problems

Manual actions for structured data issues are imposed if Google detects that some of the markups of the pages have techniques that are not allowed, such as markup of content not visible to users, the markup of irrelevant or misleading content, or other manipulation behavior.

How to use the Manual Action Report in GSC

The Google Search Console allows us to find out if manual actions have been issued against the site and view their history, with the possibility of reading all the details in this regard.

In this way, we have a clear context on the problems of the site and on its history, also useful in cases of the recent acquisition of the domain or a new consultation.

Above all, the Manual Actions report allows us to take action to correct the reported issues and then attempt to recover the lost positions and traffic on Google.

How to correct manual actions

Clicking on one of the items in the report opens a summary screen that describes the problem, provides the patterns of the pages concerned, and indicates a method of resolution.

It is good to understand that we must clean up all the pages affected by the problem and not intervene partially because otherwise, the reconsideration process will not be successful.

When we have completed the review of all the pages that have problems reported by Google, we can click on the ” Request exam ” button in the report to start a reconsideration request.

Submit a review request to Google

A request must describe the corrections made and meet three criteria, in particular, to be effective:

Explain precisely the quality problem of the site.

Describes the steps taken to resolve the problem.

It documents the result of the countermeasures adopted.

After submitting a request, we will receive a notification indicating that Google has taken the exam; at the end of the review, another message will inform us of the outcome of the process, or if the reconsideration has been accepted or rejected.

Acquisition of old reported domains, the procedure to follow

Waisberg also offers advice to those who have recently acquired a domain affected by manual actions: in addition to performing all the necessary cleaning operations and claims, the new owner can report his situation in the request and ensure that from that moment the site will follow the Google guidelines. You must not only delete all the old and problematic content but also add new good content before making the request.

The differences between the Manual Actions and Security Issues reports

In conclusion, the Googler also pauses to explain the differences between the Manual Actions reports and the Google Search Console Security Issues that have some concepts in common.

The issues listed in the Manual Actions report are detected manually on a page or site and primarily concern attempts to manipulate the Google search index, but such actions are not necessarily dangerous to users.

From the effects point of view, in most cases, the reported problems cause a deterioration of the ranking of the pages or of the whole site in the search results or the total omission from the search results, without any visual indication for the user.

Conversely, the indications in the Security Issues report information that the site has been compromised or follows a behavior that could harm visitors or their devices, for example through phishing attacks or by installing malware or unwanted software on the computer of the users.

These pages may be displayed with a warning label in the search results or a browser may display an interstitial warning page when a user tries to visit them.

The beating heart of search engine optimization has changed a bit: here are some basic SEO techniques:

Focus on creating valuable content.

Create high quality links.

Prioritize semantic search when you perform your keyword search.

However, some of the things that have changed – from the introduction of mobile indexing first to how Google now uses real user metrics to measure page speed – have certainly caused a stir and will certainly have an impact. even more important now, in the future.

In this article, you will find 10 advanced SEO tips and techniques that you need to master if you want to stay current with Google’s ever-evolving algorithm.

1. OPTIMIZE YOUR SITE SO THAT IT IS MOBILE-FRIENDLY

If you want to get the best SEO results, you need to make sure your site is mobile-friendly. Why? When Google updated its algorithm in 2016, mobile-first indexing became an SEO ranking factor.

They did it after realizing that most of the research was done using cell phones. After all, cell phone users were not limited in the 1980s. Today, billions of people around the world now have mobile devices.

Therefore, you need to optimize your site so that it is mobile-friendly and get better SEO rankings.

Here is what you need to remember regarding mobile-first:

Mobile-first indexing is already present. This means that if your site has a “desktop” version and a “mobile” version, the mobile version will be indexed and classified in preference to your desktop version. If it is not yet the case, it will be soon and there is no way to deindex it.

If you know your audience is using mobile, it’s time to take the leap! It’s time to create a responsive website.

Create content with the mobile version in mind (without sacrificing the value of the text). This means avoiding all formats that have trouble loading on mobile devices and preserving all of the content on your desktop site that helps it rank (shorter mobile sites may be more attractive, but they don’t are often not as well ranked).

The hamburger and accordion menus won’t hinder indexing and they will often improve the user experience (especially on mobile devices).

Remember, the fewer barriers your mobile site has for Google bots, the better.

2. FOCUS ON OPTIMIZING LOCAL SEO

Another modern SEO technique that has proven to be effective is to focus on local SEO. Recently, searches “near me” have increased because users are always looking for products or services close to their geographic location.

You don’t have to sell something online to try local SEO. The main goal here is for users to find your business. Users can easily find your business when you include contact information and directions on your website.

If yours is a purely online business, you should also optimize your site for local searches. And this has proven to be a very effective SEO strategy.

3. IMPROVE THE USER EXPERIENCE

If you want your site to generate more traffic and also rank higher in the search engines, you need to make sure that it is user friendly.

When your site offers visitors the experience they hoped for or better; visitors tend to spend more time on your site, which could improve your search engine ranking. Google identifies the time a user has spent on your site.

If the user takes time, Google will want to provide the most relevant results. However, you should know that for a user to spend a lot of time on your site; you need to post relevant, high-quality content.

4. MAXIMIZE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

If there is one SEO technique that could help boost your ranking, it’s social media marketing. If you can take a look at the trends and statistics of social media usage over the past decade, you will notice that the number of users continues to increase every year.

What does it mean? Your online business must also be present on social networks because it promotes brand awareness and helps you to interact easily with your target audience.

In addition, social media profiles appear on search engines, and if your posts are engaging enough, your ranking will no doubt improve.

5. CONSIDER VIDEOS AS THE NEW KING OF CONTENT

Here are some statistics:

People watch an average of 1 billion hours of video content on YouTube every day .

YouTube is the second largest search engine.

Videos increase time by (average mobile viewing of YouTube videos is more than 40 minutes)

They occupy a lot of space in the SERPs. The number of video carousels in Google’s SERPs has almost doubled.

And, remember, videos are a phenomenal way to drive engagement.

Here are some tips for getting started with creating and optimizing videos for your target audience:

Make short brand videos and product demos.

Create educational videos on the use of your products or services.

Do live broadcasts like webinars or interviews.

Add relevant metadata (shorter titles, rich descriptions) and video descriptions so that Google fully understands their intentions.

Fill in the keywords because they are used for recommended videos.

Also, keep in mind that the demand for practical videos on YouTube is increasing by 70% each year.

6. TRUST THE SEO TOOLS AVAILABLE

If you are a digital marketer, you should now have realized the importance of SEO tools and frameworks.

They help you clearly understand the performance of your website and allow you to analyze, correct errors and even generate reports on the site.

Many tools perform different functions to help improve the SEO ranking of your site. You should use them accordingly, but you should know that there are free and paid tools. They are an effective way to manage and optimize your website.

7. CREATION OF LINKS

Link building is a modern SEO technique that should not go away anytime soon. Why ?

Search engines consider backlinks as a ranking factor, and if your site has a lot of quality backlinks, it will likely rank higher.

It is up to you to implement the best link building strategy so that your website is free of toxic backlinks that could see you penalized. It is best to get your links from authoritative sites.

8. MAKE SURE TO USE LSI KEYWORDS

If you want Google robots and users to find your site easily, it is imperative to use LSI (Long Semantic Indexing) keywords. These are words that help search engines determine the relevance of your content and what it relates to.

9. FOCUS ON METADATA

Metadata is a crucial part of SEO, and it includes metadata descriptions and title tags. You must make sure that every content you publish contains it. Meta descriptions must be unique and each must describe what a specific page is about.

If you duplicate them, your site will be difficult to recognize. On the other hand, the title tags must be captivating and they must contain a keyword to inform users of the nature of your page. They must also be unique on each page.

10. WRITE CONTENT OF AT LEAST 1800 WORDS

Websites that contain more words will likely rank higher on search engines than those that display content of around 300 words.

Long messages are prioritized because Google considers them to provide detailed information on a particular topic. In addition, it is more engaging than short content, which increases the chances of sharing.

11. Increase session time, page views and decrease the bounce rate

This SEO technique is one of the ones that is giving the best results at the moment thanks to the increasingly refined and efficient algorithm called Rank Brain . Don’t miss this article about the Rank Brain algorithm if you want to know more.

The idea with this strategy is to show Google how good our content is and how much our visitors interact with it.

Next, I will tell you the techniques you can use to improve these indicators.

Add links to related pages at the beginning of articles or pages so that visitors continue browsing.

Add the links above, but instead of at the beginning of the article they are added at the end. For me the first ones are much more effective than these.

Use non-intrusive banners or popups that show more options to the reader to continue browsing the web.

12. Use internal anchor text to increase positioning

The anchor text is the text that we put in our links. As you well know, the text that we put in the links helps Google understand well what the content of the destination page is about. Well, unlike the anchor text of the external links that point to our website, with which we must be very careful, in the anchor text of the internal links we must take advantage of to be able to make it very clear to Google what the destination pages are about .

For this reason, whenever we have a link on a page that points to another internal page, whenever we can we must add one of the keywords for which we want to position the target article.

This SEO On Page technique is not harmful and will also help us to solve the cannibalization problem.

The idea here is to find quality articles or pages that do not position as we think they should position.

Well, this time we will create internal links with clear anchor text pointing to this article or page that we want to position.

13. Promote your content using ads

Do you have a great article that is the best there is on the Internet but you don’t have visitors?

Do not worry, as you are many people. Sometimes, we can write the best article for a certain topic, but if our domain does not have the necessary relevance and reputation, it will be very difficult for us to position ourselves in the first positions for our potential target audience to find us.

In this technique, what you have to do is use payment channels such as Google Ads or Social Media Ads to put your content in front of the people who want to consume it, share it and why not link.

Ads on Facebook, due to their ability to segment by audience, can help us find our target audience. Google Ads also has audiences to explore, but for now I would lean more towards Facebook.

Thanks to this strategy you can increase your visibility that will bring you leads, links and subscribers to your newsletter. For this we execute SEO strategies, right?

Depending on the budget you have, I recommend that you follow the following order of priority to find the best audience for your campaigns.

1- Start by retargeting users who have already visited your page. This can be done easily using the Facebook pixel or Google Analytics for Google Ads.
2- Use Lookalike audiences or similar to users who have already visited your page. On this occasion, my experience tells me to start with the Facebook Lookalike. Similar Google Ads audiences have not worked so well for me.
3- Finally, find audiences on Facebook that can fit in with your target users. You can also use audiences in Google Ads, but like the previous point, I recommend that you use Facebook first.

CONCLUSION

SEO techniques are not as difficult as some people assume. However, you cannot succeed in SEO if you do not implement your strategies correctly. You might consider trying the tactics mentioned above if you want to increase your SEO ranking.

A boon for e-merchants and digital marketing! Not exactly, at least not for everyone and not without adapting . Here are 7 web marketing tips to apply as quickly as possible to continue your online sale in the best conditions during the COVID-19 crisis.

1- Check that the message of your current marketing campaigns is appropriate

As recommended by the main online social platforms at the start of the crisis in France, the situation involves paying attention to what we communicate on the internet and how we say it .

Start by making an inventory of all your current marketing actions . Remove ads and messages that may be offensive, considered “insensitive”, opportunistic, or just not right for the situation.

For example if you had visual advertisements with pictures of people eating at a restaurant or walking outside. These are two activities that no one is supposed to be able to afford anymore because of the confinement instructions.

On your advertisements and any corresponding landing pages, remember to replace the message and the visuals which are not or no longer suitable , or to delete them. Especially on social platforms like Facebook and Twitter, where it is very easy and quick to react negatively, which can quickly create a bad buzz .

It is not only a question of image, but also of decency: you could strike people affected by the disease or directly confronted with the risks linked to the epidemic.

2- Confirm that you are open (or closed)

Many physical stores are temporarily closed, but there are also e-commerce involved.

If you maintain your activity, clearly indicate it on your site, from the home page and ideally throughout your site , for example on a banner.

If you cannot maintain your activity, indicate it on your site explaining the reasons . For example :

To limit the risks of contagion and protect your employees;

Because of difficulties related to logistics and delivery;

Lack of stocks or raw material;

Economic risks.

Namely, if you are a trader but do not sell online yet, Cdiscount and other marketplaces offer devices and discounts to access their market place. Do not hesitate to contact us or consult our various resources to help you get started.

3- Depending on your sector, encourage the purchase

Not all business sectors have been affected in the same way by the crisis. A study carried out in France made it possible to determine the sectors which saw their traffic and their conversions increase or decrease between January-February and March 2020:

The mass distribution (+ 162%) and the pharmacy / parapharmacy (+ 7.9%) had a strong increase in traffic and more conversions (up to + 154%);

The travel (-70%), the method (-52.9%), the luxury (-55.9%) and energy (-3.67%) are in big trouble, both in terms of traffic as conversions (almost -60% for fashion);

The marketplaces and tech have fewer visits (-3.14%), but more conversions (+ 42%);

The media (+ 88.01%) and the telecom (+ 9.63%) saw their traffic increase, but visitors spend less time on the site and there is less conversion.

In general, we see that traffic tends to increase, so do conversions, but the time spent on pages, page views and conversion rate decrease.

Consequently, if like the large distribution and the pharmacy / parapharmacy you sell products of first necessity in this period of pandemic, you will a priori have no particular action to undertake. Otherwise, sales will have to be encouraged .

You have to limit the friction on your site, starting by reassuring the visitor and encouraging them to buy with offers, particularly for delivery. It’s a good time to change your free delivery policy , by lowering the price of the minimum basket for example. Be careful however because at this time delivery is a sensitive subject, make sure that the delivery company has enough deliverers and that it respects safety and hygiene measures.

In short: before setting up new marketing actions, make sure that you limit friction on your site and that you encourage conversion .

4- If you are teleworking, update your Google Analytics filters

For effective web marketing, you need good means of monitoring and tracking. You are probably tracking your site performance and conversions through Google Analytics. In this case, you have surely set up filters not to count internal visits in your statistics .

These filters are found in the Google Analytics administration (at view or account level), they allow you to set the IP addresses not to be taken into account.

However, if you and your employees are teleworking, your respective IP addresses are no longer the same , unless you are using a VPN or another remote network connection system. And therefore your analytical data is distorted, especially if you have several employees who work regularly on the site.

So if you can, set up a VPN. Otherwise take the time to exclude the IP addresses of those who visit the site most often to avoid seeing artificially inflated figures, and therefore effectively measure the success of your marketing actions. To know the IP address used in your home, type “my ip” in Google, you should find it very easily.

5- Reduce your online advertising expenses

Since the start of the pandemic, there has been less research on products that are not of basic necessity. If you do not have such products, it will surely be necessary to remove your paid SEO campaigns (SEA) . Even the most profitable campaigns usually won’t work as well, or even cost you money unnecessarily. However, make sure before stopping that your products are not important to your customers.

What is unsettling is that in many industries the auction has never been so low . This is probably due to the different advertisers who have reduced the number of advertisements, or who have cut advertising budgets outright. If your business offers products or services that still meet current demand, you should closely monitor your bids and expenses. It’s time to focus on your ROAS, or Return On Ad Spent .

Jeff Snyder, creator of the Elumynt advertising tool, shares his advice:

As conversion rates, CPMs, and CPCs are changing, you may need to be more direct than usual. On the research side, if you’re using smart bidding, consider switching to manual bidding, or at least re-evaluate your cost per click to reflect current changes. On social media, you may find that you can significantly increase your reach within your best performing audiences. Be ready to change your budget, change your offers and tweak your campaigns daily

It is indeed likely that you have a much better reach on social networks, Twitter and Facebook having announced an increase in the number of daily active users (+ 23% for Twitter, + 50% for most Facebook products) – despite declining advertising results. On the other hand, if you try your hand at advertising on social networks, be careful as mentioned in point 1 to check that your advertising is suitable and that you are broadcasting it in the right places . Social advertising is risky and not necessarily suitable for everyone right now, take more precautions than for any channel.

6- Promote emailing

Email is economical AND effective . Knowing that there is nothing you can do for advertising and research, which will lead to lower expenses in SEA and SMA, you can transfer part of your budget to email campaigns. For some industries, it’s very simple: just remind your customers that if the stores are closed you continue to sell online.

Remember once again that the epidemic is not to be taken lightly, communicate only if it is appropriate and reassure your customers as much as possible . Now is not the time to put forward special COVID-19 offers…

Emails will certainly not make up for your performance losses, but if you show compassion, that you can show values and instill confidence in your customers and prospects, it will bring you sooner or later.

7- Continue your SEO and content marketing efforts anyway

Your performance linked to natural referencing and your content may also be losing momentum. But unlike advertising, it is recommended to continue your SEO and content marketing efforts.

There is less research, of course, but positioning is always of paramount importance and the search engine robots will not stop crawling your sites. When the containment ends, you don’t want to lose position, do you? So avoid cutting your SEO and marketing expenses too brutally, you risk losing all the efforts made so far. Above all, by continuing your efforts, you will ensure that you return to good performance more quickly once the crisis is over .

When companies realize the importance of natural referencing, they call upon professionals for a punctual SEO service, often for the creation of a site. Some believe that optimizing your site once is enough, and that not dealing with SEO will not cause any problems.

You can imagine, it’s not that simple!

Here’s what will happen if you stop dealing with SEO on your website.

If you stop posting content properly

When you stop publishing content, the following happens:

You no longer target new topics and keywords constantly . This puts you on fewer requests and brings you less new traffic.

You no longer create new pages that can improve internal networking , and the number of links decreases.

You no longer capture new visitors to add to your remarketing audiences , email lists, and notification lists.

You no longer generate content that can be used to create hub pages , which are “master” pages that link all pages of the same subject. These are often pages that position themselves very well.

You no longer create content that can be shared on social networks , which can bring awareness and traffic.

You no longer encourage your visitors to return to your site to discover new articles . This reduces searches related to your brand, a quality indicator for Google.

Above all, if you stop creating content, you tell Google that your site is no longer as active as it used to be and you start to sign the death of your site.

If you don’t watch for technical errors

People who do not have web experience often do not understand that technical problems can arise out of nowhere, for no real reason. It is impossible that a site never has SEO problems, even on perfectly optimized sites upstream.

If you do not control the technical aspects of your site, you will probably encounter one of the following errors:

You will end up blocking your site with the robots.txt file.

You will generate duplicate content.

You will accidentally publish the development version of your site.

You will miss the errors of structured data, HTML content (hreflang, canonical, metas…)

When you do not monitor the technical part of your site, especially in SEO, technical errors will start to multiply. Think of your site as a garden: it needs regular maintenance, otherwise weeds will proliferate and your crops will die.

It is also essential to keep your site technically up to date, to monitor essential trends such as mobile indexing, loading speed, AMP pages, etc.

If you stop updating your pages

When you “refresh your pages” correctly, traffic typically increases by 10-30% , sometimes more. The main reason is that Google notices the new content and the value it brings, which usually means better positioning.

Here are the different ways to refresh your pages:

Add FAQs

Add links to other articles

Update facts and dates

Extend the text

Add structured data

Change the template

Add videos or images

The most important thing to do when updating a page is to verify that it matches the search intent and that the page is better than the first result of that search.

Not updating its content therefore implies that your content will not be reviewed by Google , and that it may therefore fall into oblivion, or be overtaken by your competitors if you were well positioned. Ultimately all these pages not updated and especially the “out of date”, if they become too numerous, can penalize your entire site …

If you stop creating new pages

Creating new pages can be difficult for some sites, whose activity is limited to fixed products or services, rarely updated.

As with blog posts, if you stop creating new pages, you lose opportunities for new keywords .

So remember to create pages regularly, targeting new terms and organizing them by segment. Above all, create them for SEO, but don’t hesitate to make them landing pages for your campaigns .

As your site grows, consider creating more landing pages targeting specific keywords and audiences . Without abusing it, of course, it is necessary that all your pages have a separate utility with unique content .

If you stop following the wrong links

By stopping SEO, you are taking the risk that your backlinks profile will get out of control. That is to say that you will receive inappropriate return links, for example spam, forgotten paid links, artificial links and other types of links penalizing your SEO , without being able to disown them and therefore prevent polluting your pagerank.

By not monitoring your links, you will not see:

Sites scraping yours with links to your site.

Google alerts of sites hacked by malware .

Competitors trying to do negative SEO on your site.

Google advises to disavow that in case of manual action, but it is better to get ahead and monitor its back links regularly. If you don’t update your disapproval list more than once a year, you are putting your site at risk . Some very competitive sites even need to be checked more regularly.

If you stop monitoring your stolen content

To give you an idea of the importance of monitoring its content:

Go to the most important page on your site.

Copy a paragraph of at least 2-3 sentences.

Paste this text with quotes in the Google search bar.

It’s a safe bet that you will see other sites than yours in the search results. Some may have even stolen more content from your site.

Imagine the impact it could have if this phenomenon occurs for many other pages on your site. Often times we find fully duplicated websites, stolen key pages or individual sections of a recovered page.

Here’s what to do when you find stolen content :

Rewrite the content of your site

Ask the other site to remove it, first by email or phone.

Send a registered with acknowledgment of receipt , listing everything that has been stolen.

Take legal action after making a bailiff’s report proving the anteriority of the publication of your content.

Sometimes it is possible to ask the host of the site to completely remove the site in question .

If you do not check and do not take these actions in case of content theft, this can have an extremely negative effect on your positioning. Sometimes the negative effects of duplicate content take a long time to correct.

You know that you should not stop your efforts in SEO. If you read this article, you will surely know how powerful it is to help your business grow if used regularly and consistently.

You will therefore understand that you must perpetually create content , update the existing , monitor the various axes mentioned (technique, links, stolen content …). As in many areas, consistency is essential in SEO.

Do not wait to have penalties or lose positioning to act!

AdWords or Google Ads is a Google advertising system in which advertisers bid on certain keywords so that their clickable ads appear prominently in the spaces reserved for sponsored links in Google’s search results. Advertisers must pay for these clicks. Many factors influence the costs of AdWords advertising. For example the cost per click differs from one country to another.

To calculate the profit compared to the sums you invest, you must follow the return on investment of these ads. Indeed, ROI ( return on investment ) is an indicator that measures how much you earn compared to the money you spend.

We will detail in this article the factors that influence your ROI and see how to adjust them to increase it through Google Ads .

First, optimize your website

To avoid wasting the clicks you have invested in and impacting your ROI, check to see if your website is running slowly. With the Google Page Speed Insights tool, you can test the loading speed of the landing page. This tool will give you recommendations to improve the display speed. Many of these tips will be easy to apply with basic development knowledge, and for others, you will need to hire a developer. You also need to optimize your web images, eliminate unnecessary widgets, and check how easy it is to browse your site. Finally we must test if it is responsive design , that is to say if it is compatible with other supports (tablets, smartphones …).

Find out which products are worth an AdWords advertising campaign

It makes sense to focus your Ads budget on items or products with a high gross margin. For example, in the case of a company selling home furnishings, it is more relevant to highlight items such as mattresses, armchairs, high-end beds than to advertise on low-margin items like low-priced decorative items.

Once you have a clear idea of your main “winning products”, you must do a study on the keywords in order to obtain all the possible variations of expressions for these products.

Identify keywords relevant to your business

Choose relevant keywords . The main keywords of your activity can be generated using several online tools. The usual reflex is to use keywords that generate the greatest number of clicks, which is not necessarily the right strategy, AdWords prioritizing quality over quantity.

Companies do not always have a clear vision of the correspondences of the keywords and their impact. AdWords allows you to designate each keyword / key phrase as a broad match, a broad match with modifier, an expression match, and an exact match. The broad match will always generate the highest number of clicks because it allows Google to interpret your keywords in many search queries.

Pay attention to the launch period and the GeoLocation of your advertising campaigns

It is important to choose your targets carefully and to adapt your campaigns to their characteristics. In some cases, ads perform better at certain times of the day. You have to plan the ads for the days and periods that best suit your targets on the Internet. Also, don’t forget to take geolocation into consideration. An advertising campaign intended for Marseillaise differs from a campaign intended for Parisians. This will allow you to have local control and a considerable competitive advantage.

Ensure regular follow-ups of your campaigns

Attracting traffic to your ads and generating lots of clicks are relatively easy actions, but a high volume of traffic does not necessarily translate into an increase in your ROI. The best way to measure your return on investment is to set up conversion tracking on your campaign.

By implementing conversion tracking, you will be able to “eliminate” the keywords generating a high number of unnecessary clicks because they are not converted into purchases, which will allow you to make significant savings. Better yet, you can increase your bids on keywords that have generated a real return on investment, and therefore improve the overall ROI of your business.

By applying the steps detailed above, you can reduce your costs to optimize your return on investment on AdWords campaigns. If you have applied everything but your cost per click still does not allow you to obtain a reasonable ROI, then your strategy must be reassessed. Contact Elitech Systems, a web agency specializing in Google advertising. We’ll help you achieve the highest AdWords ROI and grow your business on the web.

If you need to move the needle on the traffic and conversions from website, Architecture of site. This is often one of the most effective tools in your toolbox.

And yet, very few SEOs make the most of it.

I have analyzed a large established website where we have recently made simple adjustments to the site architecture using only 2-3 of the principles described in this publication. Traffic and conversions increased 175% in a few months. For sites with poorly optimized potential, this can be like opening the gates.

In this article, we will cover not only the same tactics used previously, but many more to bring your site to its full potential.

In this article you will find:

What is the architecture of the site?

1. Golden Rule: Satisfy User Intent

2. Adjust your web architecture

3.Take advantage of the main pages

4. Create content silos

5. Context linked pages

6. High authority link to landing pages

7. Pagination, See All and Endless Scroll Pages

8. Smart faceted navigation

9. Take advantage of HTML sitemaps

10. New more important content link

What is web architecture?

The architecture of a web page, in its simplest form, is how it organize and navigate the pages of your website. The architecture is built by navigation and links, but it also relates to other elements such as URLs, navigation paths, category pages, site maps and professional web design Good architecture site helps users and search engines find what they are looking for.

Web architecture also makes it possible to define both the relevance and the importance of its content. You can direct users and robots to their most critical pages and provide signals on your content .

In summary, the architecture of the website aims to make your website as easy to use and understand.

The architecture of a website, when done correctly, has many positive benefits for SEO positioning:

1. Better indexing of pages (especially for large sites).

2. Top traffic rankings and more .

3. Improved user experience

When you identify the architecture of your website, it is magic to see how traffic improves, visitors get involved and conversions increase.

1. Golden rule: Satisfy the intention of the user

When choosing how to link and organize your website, you need to consider 3 main questions:

1. What are people looking for?

2. What is important?

3. How are the pages linked to each other ?

Good web architecture gives visitors that wish and they need the path as clear and fast as possible. Consider this example of Application Design , a web design company that manages all three in a big way.

The user’s intention is fulfilled and, in many cases, out of date. And because the relationship between pages is clearly organized, search engines can better understand and classify each page.

Using analytical and research data, you can easily find which pages are searched for on your site:

# Most visited pages

# Internal search, perfect for the online store

#Best Conversion Page

The pages at the top of these performance measures should be highlighted, while the pages at the bottom may have less visibility. Example: is this link “About us” in your header the most important link in your navigation, when almost nobody uses it?

The quickest shortcut to improve web architecture to improve SEO It is the navigation that provides user-centric solutions.

2. Adjust your web architecture

A “flat” website architecture is an architecture in which important pages are not too far from the home page, which means they are required fewer clicks to navigate .

Many SEO experts refer to the ” 3 click rule “, which means that no important page should be more than 3 clicks from your home page (or possibly another high authority page) .

If each page contains more than 100 links, the number of pages possible in 3 clicks increases exponentially:

200 links per page yield 8,000,000 pages

500 links per page give 125,000,000 pages

1000 links per product page 1 billion pages in 3 clicks

Fewer clicks means that pages are easier to find, and “proximity” to important pages such as a home page can indicate the importance of the page itself.

You may ask: Why not use a completely flat architecture and link EVERYTHING from the home page? At first glance, this may seem like a good idea, but there are a few very serious reasons why you shouldn’t do this.

Too many links on a page have drawbacks, such as the loss of authority distributed among the most important pages.

A completely flat architecture steals the opportunity to organize and define a contextual hierarchy in its content, and therefore, where you want the user to go.

How to check the depth of clicks

Unless your website has only a few pages, examine the depth of the click by hand no. It’s easy to do. Fortunately, SEMrush SEO audit software reports the depth of clicks on your website, generating an awesome internal link report .

To really understand its structure, it is often useful to see a visual example. Sitebulb is one of the most popular visualization tools, which makes it easy to visualize the depth of links on your website.

3. Take advantage of the main pages

A home page is an important general information page that presents a general topic or category, which connects to secondary categories and more specific topics.

The main pages have several objectives:

1. They provide a quick overview of the subject.

2. Answer the main questions users may have.

3. Link to important sub-themes and main products.

4. They are generally easier to use than category pages.

5. Help build your theme authority for a web page.

The best main pages are the ones with many relevant links pointing to them, so you can pass this link authority (PageRank) on to any secondary issues with which it is linked.

Category pages These are often natural center pages because they have a lot of natural linking authority. The key is to improve your category pages with additional information beyond a list of subcategories or services and products. Whatever important related pages will help your visitor to always be good candidates to link to.

4. Create content silos

While the main pages are great for linking closely related topics, the real power comes when combining main pages with content silos .

A content silo is a hierarchical organization of its content by subject . An example of a well-organized silo would be:

– Beginning
– Books
– Food
– – Cakes
– – Healthy

While you can think of the central pages as the center of a main topic, you can think of content silos such as going up and down a ladder, where hierarchy is important. A clear example of silos would be in online stores.

Take the previous example of silos. Each step in the hierarchy is linked to both the previous and next steps . This helps users navigate and search for sub-themes to better understand the content.

Content silos are usually grouped by 2-3 elements:

1. Navigation , including breadcrumbs.

2. Contextual links .

3. URL structures

The important thing in the content silos is that you group them by themes and sub-themes and that you organize them in scale mode , from general descriptions to very specific subjects.

5. Cross-linked pages linked to the context

Once you’ve created a web architecture that takes advantage of central pages and organizes content in silos. The next step is to find out what will make your website much more powerful:

Link linked internal pages.

Not only are silos linked, but pages can also link . This tactic turns out to be one of the critical steps that led to an increase in traffic for the site mentioned in the first example.

SEO positioning is improving considerably with links to internally linked pages . This way of structuring the content makes it possible to understand the search engines on the main subject of the article.

To be fair, this is not the only way to do it. SEO experts continually discuss the best internal link strategy. Some SEO experts like to minimize cross links between main pages, category and product, others link to everything in sight.

6. High authority link to landing pages

Now that you’ve created master pages, silos, and associated internal links, there is another factor that I consider important to add links to your landing pages.

Landing page tab Any page on your website is important to your users. It could be:

* A sales page that you want to promote from your home page, as a specific product.

* A high conversion page in your silo structure, like the contact page for customer conversion.

A page of high authority It is any page with many links which tends to rank well and receives a lot of traffic. Consider an advertising agency, the best strategy would be to get the client to the budget page to offer the business services and thus perform the user-to-client conversion.

The idea is to transfer link authority from your high authority pages to your important landing pages which may be sub-linked. Sometimes these are shortcut links or links that are not being browsed.

How to determine which pages to add links to and from where? There are several methods:

Google Search Console Internal Links Report : Displays the number of unprocessed internal links for your 1000 main URLs. (Professional tip: If your site contains more than 1,000 URLs, create separate Search Console properties at the directory level for more data.)

Several tools including SEMrush They can report authority measures for each URL. My current favorite is SEMrush . You can use it to search for high authority and sub-linked URLs.

Google Analytics It can tell you which pages are getting the most traffic and which pages are converting well and would benefit from increased traffic.

For advanced SEO, you can calculate the internal PageRank using the SEMrush authority tool to find URLs linked to a high and low PageRank.

7. Pagination, see everything and infinite scroll pages

For category pages with hundreds or thousands of ads, 3 techniques that can simultaneously help improve the web architecture on your website :

Paging

See all pages.

Infinite scrolling

The simplest and generally preferred solution is to split lists of long paging categories . Implemented correctly, pagination can help improve the virtual architecture of the website By telling Google that all of your entries are part of the same series.

Most SEO experts prefer simple pagination because of its ease of use, both by robots and by humans.

On the other hand, the ” see all ” type pages can also improve the web architecture by creating a link to all the entries on the same page.

Some SEO experts prefer “see all” pages because they think Google can better track all entries when linked from a single page, a clear example would be the blog page, where all articles are organized by dates. It works well if you don’t have too many products or publications. The challenge with “see all” pages is that for pages with more than 100 or 1000 entries, this can result in slow load times and little user experience.

A hybrid approach is ” infinite displacement “, in which results are loaded continuously into the user’s browser as they scroll through the page, but they are also marked by traditional paginated results as robots can easily understand. Google has good documentation on a preferred way of implementing these infinite scrolling pages.

Optimize pagination

When pagination is used, it’s easy to overlook smaller details that can help with SEO friendliness and positioning:

Google now ignores rel = prev / next markup, so it’s important not to trust it as the only paging method.

Don’t overlook pagination links at the bottom of your page. Because these are real links, not just suggestions, there is strong evidence that they send a stronger signal to Google than HTTP header links.

Note that the pagination links are real links . This means that they affect usability and tracking, and can also transmit real link signals like PageRank (although in reality they are only a small amount).

Instead of establishing standard linear pagination links (2, 3, 4, etc.), some SEO experts have studied the most optimal strategies for linking sections within pagination.

8. Intelligent faceted navigation

Faceted navigation refers to navigation that allows users to sort, filter and limit the Results based on many characteristics and criteria. Sometimes it’s better to see something to understand it, so here is an example of Zappos.

Faceted navigation is very useful for users, but for search engines, you have the problem of creating millions of URL combinations, many of them with duplicate or almost duplicate content. From a tracking and indexing perspective, this can be a big headache.

The key to successful faceted navigation is: allow search engines to track and index your unique pages that generate traffic , while prohibiting them from tracking and indexing low value URLs .

Once you understand which URL you want to index and which not, there are many tools available to you to control faceted navigation, including:

Meta Robots

Robots.txt

Rel = canonical (the one I personally recommend).

Nofollow attributes (my favorite to apply in the footer).

JavaScript schemas.

9. Take advantage of sitemaps

Almost everyone understands the importance of XML sitemaps. But HTML sitemaps embedded in web pages are becoming increasingly rare.

Let’s bring them back!

An HTML sitemap can be read by humans and can provide humans and search robots with clues to the structure of your website.

Consider this perfect example of the New York Times HTML Sitemap . Not only is it linked to almost every important page on the site, it is organized by date, content format and subject.

HTML sitemaps are often most effective on large websites where the structure of the web page may not be immediately evident from the menu. But even small sites can benefit, as HTML sitemaps are often also useful for human visitors.

10. Link new relevant content

Sometimes we run into this problem: publishing a new service or product, and not going anywhere. No visibility, no rating and no traffic.

Part of the challenge is that Google still has no signals to judge its new content. Even if you put it on your sitemap, ping Google and share it on social media, Google just doesn’t have enough signals to judge it.

A simple solution is to simply link your new content more prominently to often in important parts of your website, including your home page or entries related to new content. John Mueller of Google explains:

What also makes a big difference for us is that the home page is really important for your website, because the most recent content is also linked quite high in the structure of your website, so maybe even in Your home page.
So what many sites have is this sidebar in which it’s like new items or new products or like products for sale or something, whatever you want to push a little bit in the results of research, which certainly helps us.

– John Mueller

News sites and blog feeds are great for linking to new content in a visible way. Static websites and online stores with many products sometimes struggle.

Featured sidebars , news pages, and blog feeds They are great for linking to prominent new content.

Final conclusions

Getting the correct web architecture for your site is a challenge, but the rewards are often excellent. In addition, you can try it, measure it and change it over time. More than one attempt is often necessary to increase the performance of SEO positioning, but the above principles should provide you with the tools to make the difference.

How to activate the option “temporarily closed” on Google My Business

Google lets you indicate in your Google My Business listing whether your business is temporarily closed. This information will be visible to anyone looking for your business on Google Search or who wants to get there via Google Maps. You will find below the procedure to follow:

Log into your Google My Business account

On the menu on your left, click on Info

On the right, click on the “Close this establishment on Google” section

Click on “mark as temporarily closed”

mark the establishment as closed permanently

delete the record

How to indicate exceptional opening hours

You can enter exceptional opening hours for days when your establishment is not open as usual, such as on public holidays or in special contexts (Covid-19). Here’s how:

Log into your Google My Business account

Click on Profile and select the day concerned

Enter the corresponding opening and closing times

Click on OK. To add other exceptional opening hours, click on “Add your hours”

When you’re done, click “Apply” in the upper right corner of the “Exceptional Hours” screen

Note: if you define exceptional opening hours, your usual hours remain unchanged for all other days. You can only enter exceptional opening hours if you have already set up regular opening hours on your Google My Business page.

Google’s priority: the quality and reliability of information

Google wants to make sure that all property owners have easy access to essential features to indicate whether they are open 24 hours a day, temporarily closed, or have exceptional opening hours.

The options put in place on Google My Business are intended to strengthen the quality and reliability of information from Google search and Google Maps to be able to deal with exceptional situations such as the context of crisis linked to Covid-19.

Google explains that it is possible that some updates to business listings take longer than expected, their workforce being reduced given the current context. The American firm said that health-related establishments will remain a priority.

The decision that Google must make should not leave the SEO sphere indifferent. In a trial that opened in 2012 before the British High Court of Justice, the American multinational is accused by Foundem, a price comparison site, of anti-competitive practices: Google is said to have demoted its products in the results of search for its engine from 2006. The American firm must now choose between the disclosure of the secrets of its algorithm or the withdrawal of confidential documents provided as part of this trial.

The origins of the case: abuse of a dominant position by Google

While only accessible to a handful of users, Foundem always appeared on the first page in search results offered by Google on shopping-related queries. As the New York Times describes , two days after its opening to the general public, the British price comparator fell sharply in the Google index, tens or even hundreds of pages from its initial positioning.

Proof of an abuse of a dominant position on the part of the engine in favor of its Google Shopping service, Foundem managed at the same time to maintain its positions in the SERPs of other search engines. The company filed a complaint in 2012 with the British High Court of Justice and asked Google for damages for the losses suffered.

To prove his innocence in this case, Google provided a series of confidential documents through two engineers, Cody Kwok and Michael Pohl. These exhibits aim to ” explain the functioning and the objectives of Google’s ranking algorithms, and how they were applied to shopping comparison sites in general and to Foundem in particular “, according to judge Roth in charge of this case .

An independent SEO expert appointed, Google tries to discredit him

Foundem replied by saying that these documents, which were supposed to provide a better understanding of how Google’s search algorithm works, were too technical for British magistrates. The latter thus granted Foundem the possibility of appointing an independent SEO expert, who would be authorized to examine these confidential documents: it is Philipp Kloeckner .

The expert would thus have access to what the British now call ” the crown jewels ” of Google, which the Mountain View firm tries to avoid by all means. ” The integrity of Google’s ranking processes is based on the fact that all webmasters or website owners have the same degree of access to information on Google’s ranking … This will no longer be the case if information of this type are made available to some people offering business services to help improve their search rankings , “defends Google.

The American engine even tried to discredit Philipp Kloeckner before the British court, arguing that the expert had worked for Trivago and Visual Meta, two companies which have already complained to the European Commission about anti-competitive practices against him, to replace him by its two own experts, to no avail. “It is fundamental that a party to the dispute is not required to appoint as its own expert a person proposed by the other party, ” said Justice Roth.

The dilemma Google is facing and its consequences

In mid-March, the British High Court of Justice granted Google a ” reasonable time ” to make its choice: either it allows expert Philipp Kloeckner to view these documents, with the risk that the entire SEO community may know the secrets of his algorithm once the case has been made public, or he withdraws his confidential documents, which will result in making him actually guilty of abuse of a dominant position in the trial between him and Foundem.

As a third alternative, Google could also offer the comparator to find an amicable agreement with millions of euros in damages. If this choice allows him not to have to reveal what constitutes the heart of his search algorithm, he implies that Google would admit his guilt in this case, which would open the way to other web players who are also victims of anti-competitive practices of the search engine. In either case, Google will have to make a choice, which should have far-reaching consequences within the SEO community.
